Books that I recommend
Markus Herz (1747-1803) was a German physician and lecturer on philosophy who wrote 'Be careful about reading health books. Some fine day you'll die of a misprint'. I wonder what he would make of the plethora of health books, diets, internet articles, blogs and social media sites today giving us such conflicting advice on how to be healthy. I am an avid reader and am often asked by my clients to recommend sensible, well-researched books to help them manage their diets or health conditions. Some of my favourites are listed below.

Food Combining for Health |
Doris Grant & Jean Joice |
I have been working with food combining principles since the late 1980s and recommend this system of eating to clients with digestive problems and/or inflammation which causes complaints such as gout and arthritis. This is the original book on the subject and in my opinion contains the best information and explanation of the process. |
Eat Smart |
Naomi Smart |
Eat Smart - What to Eat in a Day - Every Day. This is a 'Whole Food, Plant Based' way of eating that gives sensible advice and recipes that everyone can enjoy. Don't be put off because it is vegan. We all need to eat more veg and this book gives some really tasty and inspiring ideas. |
Swallow This |
Joanna Blythman |
Swallow This: Serving Up the Food Industry's Darkest Secrets is compulsory reading for anyone interested in what really goes into their food today. This isn't just about ready meals and processed foods but enzymes and 'natural' flavourings, and preservatives that sound so wholesome we don't give them a second thought, and processing aids that don't have to be declared on ingredient listings. Fascinating and more than a little bit scary. |
The Four Pillar Plan |
Dr Rangan Chatterjee |
How to Relax, Eat, Move and Sleep Your Way to a Longer, Healthier Life by an NHS GP who believes in integrated, lifestyle medicine. |
Change |
Maggie Whittle & Sylvia Goddard |
'CHANGE' is a toolkit for life, filled with wisdom, humour, scenarios, metaphorical adventures, powerful strategies and practical resources to quickly yet profoundly transform stress, fear and self-doubt into a new confidence and true power. Why not get the best out of your life, stop worrying, believe in yourself and feel a lot happier? Use a range of proven, effective, light-hearted, smart and simple techniques to get the life your truly deserve. |
Fresh Clean Home |
Wendy Graham |
If you're fed up with the all the plastics and chemicals that are used in your cleaning routine then check out this wonderful book on making your own natural cleaning products. |
The Life Changing Magic of Tidying |
Marie Kondo |
I know that it sounds a cliche that a tidy house is a tidy mind but everyone I know who has followed this little programme has benefited in some way. If you feel stressed or overwhelmed and surrounded by 'stuff' then give this book a go. |
Veggie Desserts + Cakes |
Kate Hackworthy |
We all know that a healthy diet is not based on desserts and cakes but of course they have a place in our lives. If you don't want to miss out but are dedicated to getting your 5+ a day then combine the best of both worlds and add veg to your baking. |
Blackberry Cottage |
Kate Saunders |
Cakes with secret ingredients from aubergine to zucchini. If you are daring in the baking department then this is the book for you. Amaze your friends with the likes of Kale Swiss Roll, Savoy Cabbage Mocha Torte, Pea, Strawberry and Basil Chiffon Cake and Cauliflower and Blueberry Cheesecake, to mention but a few of the delicious bakes in this stylish book. |
